Email – the evil necessisity

Email, we get a lot of complaints about it and we all use it. Most of us have 2 or more email accounts. Some people use email more than others. Some people don’t care if it disappears and others lives are on hold or over if it disappears.

So, let’s start here. There are two different types of email; POP and IMAP. POP email generally is used for one device only and generally set up to download all email from the server to that device. Note, I said GENERALLY. Meaning that this particular email type CAN be set up to leave a certain amount on the server and multiple devices access that email. POP is generally used for individuals and not businesses. IMAP always leaves a copy of the email on the server until you delete and is specifically designed for multiple devices automatically. This type of setting is usually for businesses. However, in our new connected world with multiple devices and being slave to email, I recommend most people use the IMAP settings. There is no sense in going into what the acronym’s of POP and IMAP exactly are it will not make a difference for this blog.

With POP email if you are using it on one PC and that PC crashes you might loose all your email. Like I said previously, it can be set up to hold some of that email at the server. IMAP always holds a copy at the server. The good part about it staying on the server is that it is usually backed up by the people running the server every night. However, if you are using some free email service like Gmail, Ymail, Hotmail, etc. you might find that you get little or no support for lost email. That includes the fact that if someone hacks your account, the only thing you can usually do is close that email account and use a new one. I won’t go into it right now but that is the reason to not use Google to host your web site or email for a business at all.

Now that you know there are two ways it is sent to you we can now talk about clients. What is a client? Microsoft Outlook is an client. There are many clients out there. The key to it is this. Microsoft Outlook was specifically designed to work with Microsoft email server’s known as Exchange Servers. Other email clients are usually considered to be multi-platform. Meaning simply that they are designed to work with both Microsoft Exchange Servers and other server’s which can include Linux. What client is right for you? If you are a business using a Microsoft Exchange Server whether it is a local/on-site server or a cloud based Microsoft Exchange Server, Outlook is the way to go. If you are using an ISP or Web Hosting companies email; like Windstream, Charter, AT&T or ones like GoDaddy, Wix, etc., you should use a different client. We recommend Thunderbird by Mozilla, the same people that bring you Firefox. You can download Thunderbird Here.

Why? As we already talked about Microsoft Outlook is specifically designed for Microsoft Exchange Server email. That does not mean that Outlook will not work with other systems. However, it does mean there could be issues. I will give you a real world scenario, that you can call you email people and verify it if you want. GoDaddy supplies email but if you are not using their Microsoft Office 365 Exchange program their exact statement about Microsoft Outlook working is this “We provide email and it works through the web-based interface just fine. We provide the common settings to use on email clients as a courtesy but we will not guarantee they will work nor will we support any email client.” I bet you didn’t know that did you? This goes for Windstream, Comcast, AT&T and other Web Hosting Companies.

Now finally for those home users, if you are on Windstream specifically it is even worse if you are trying to access accounts that are not on their specific servers. We have seen so many issues with people trying to access their Web Hosting company email through a client and using Windstream as an ISP. One thing that will help you is to keep your Inbox clean. Make folders and move the email that is not pertinent out of the Inbox, delete email that is not needed, make sure you empty the trash in the client and good luck. As people that are stuck in Dawsonville, Dahlonega and a few other surrounding areas are stuck with the WORST ISP ON THE PLANET = WINDSTREAM

Piss On Windstream

What Should a Business Use?

It’s very simple. A business should either use Microsoft Outlook with a Microsoft Exchange Server. This is usually most easily done by contacting your Web Hosting company like GoDaddy to set that up. I am saying that simply because ISP’s and Web Hosting companies all have the same exact statement “we provide email to use as a web based interface and will not support the client/programs.” You may also chose to use Office.com or Outlook.com as a viable Microsoft Exchange hosting plan for your needs.

As always we are here to help and answer any questions you have at AML Computer Services

Mac Users – Anti-Virus & Clean Up Programs

Most Mac users think they can’t get viruses or add-on programs that cause pop-ups. That is completely wrong. As a matter of fact, we have seen a huge increase in both. Mac users are very intuitive, usually more techie about their products but are very misinformed about viruses and security on their products. Because of this Mac users do not know where to turn to get help or what products are available. That is where we, AML Computer Services, come into the picture for you.

Guess what Mac users, all this we are sharing is FREE.

So one thing you can do is go to your Finder and under Go, click Utilities then click Disk Utility. It will come up like this.

Mac Disk Utilities

Mac Disk Utilities

Once it does click your Mac drive and then click Verify Disk Permissions, when it finishes then click Repair Disk Permissions. Then run Verify Disk and if it needs it the Repair Disk will not be grayed out and you need to click and run it.

Mac users, now go download some FREE programs.

Now that you have done that go to http://www.adwaremedic.com and download their free program for Mac users. Just click Scan for Adware and follow the directions afterwards.

Adware Medic for Mac users

Now once you have done that you can go to http://www.piriform.com/ and download CCleaner for the Mac. For Mac users it will have a Download button on the site and it will be the one for the Mac. You do not need to run Analyze just click Run Cleaner. When it reaches 100% you are done.

Finally, what anti-virus program to use? AVG of course. It’s our #1 choice when it comes to a FREE anti-virus program. This is especially the case for Mac users. Don’t get us wrong, their paid version is great too. Don’t be fooled by some other free anti-virus program that has a “cool” name, get something that works, something that has been tested by a viable IT Support company, like us. Just click this link http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage to go to the Free Mac version of AVG. Install it, run it and enjoy your cleaned-up, virus free, security protected Mac, courtesy of AML Computer Services.

Cryptowall – UNLOCKED

Cryptowall, a ransomware, a type of virus but not one that any anti-virus program, UNTIL NOW, has been able to stop. Cryptowall aka Decrypt Virus will infect ALL your documents, pictures and Outlook files. When it does, they are GONE. A lot of popular anti-virus programs have claimed to be able to stop it and/or clean it but that is wrong, until now. Cryptowall has been conquered by an anti-virus program we found and tested several years ago. Cryptowall meet Stopzilla, you are now defeated.

Because we have been working on and dealing with the Cryptowall virus since about mid-November we had the pleasure of being interviewed by WSB TV Channel 2 Tom Regan about the virus, possible removal and effects on the users. We particularly focused on if paying the ransom would unlock the files, it won’t and what it meant for the users. What it means is total data loss.

WSB Cryptowall Virus Interview

WSB Cryptowall Virus Interview

Cryptowall Virus Files

Cryptowall Virus Files

At that time of that interview there was no published way to protect you from the Cryptowall virus and the ONLY method to save your files was to use several backup devices by rotating them over several days. For example, use several USB devices, use a different one every day for 3 or so days and check every day for the Cryptowall virus files. See picture on right, the three bottom files are the supposed instructions on how to remove the virus, it’s part of the scam and all it really does is shows you that you are infected. This usually houses itself in your Documents or Picture folder. The first sign you may have a problem is that your computer comes up and asks “what program do you want to use to open this file” when you are opening a Word, Excel file or Picture. However, if you check daily for the files above and have done a backup, you might be ok.

The update of the virus definitions for previously purchased versions will be out a in a few weeks. If you don’t want to wait for the definitions you can pay for the upgrade. Even if you have purchased the Lifetime version the Lifetime version will not update the definitions for a few weeks, you have to pay for the upgrade. We will be doing it at a heavily reduced price and no install fee from us. If you wish to purchase and install it yourself, visit their site at http://www.stopzilla.com/products/stopzilla- antivirus

Who is AML Computer Services?

Who is AML Computer Services? AML Computer Services is named after our daughter, Ana-Marie Liane, was started with zero customers out of our house. In the summer of 2010 I personally handed out 3000 business cards to get business. Today AML Computer Services employs 3 people. Daniel Sides who is married with one child and one due in March who has just moved into his first house and Lucas Ramirez who is trying to buy a new car and of course Rick Eubanks.

So as you know we can’t be where we are without our wonderful customers. In May we will hit our 5 year anniversary and will be close to 3 years at our current location. I wanted to let you all know we had a 33% increase in business in 2014 over 2013. So that means 2014 we had another amazing year thanks to you allowing us to help you with your computer and cell phone repairs. We can not express enough how much we appreciate you continuing to tell everyone about our stellar service.

Needless to say we aren’t perfect but we do way more right than wrong. With almost 1400 likes on our page and 4.5 or so stars that’s a win to us. Sure you have an occasional person that may post a negative. We aren’t perfect but we surely try to make sure we are and we do strive for 100% satisfaction guarantee. I doubt you can find too many businesses like AML Computer Services that will do as much for free or go overboard to help as we do but it doesn’t mean we will be abused. When you aren’t willing to let someone that is wrong trample on you that’s when you don’t get perfect scores.

People often ask us what things AML Computer Services support, of course this being a family business makes it a personal decision also. We support the Dawson County Humane Society, Dawson County Humane Society Thrift Store, R.E.A.D. of Dawsonville, WeeBooks of Dawsonville, a variety of sports with the Dawson County High School and the school itself. We have done low cost work for No One Alone, Dawson County Family Connection, Ric-Rack, Abba House Thrift Store. We also try to help any kids that come by selling candy or other advertising for the Dawson and Lumpkin areas. We advertise in both local papers Dawson News & Advertiser and the The Dahlonega Nugget and we also advertise in a local phone book Lakeview Publishing. I know the last isn’t supporting for a charity but I included it to show our support of other local businesses and the community.

We chose to drop most of our printing services, specifically the ones in-house and concentrate more on our web design. As we can offer a lower cost and higher quality than you can usually get.

So again thank you and we look forward to a great 2015 at AML Computer Services.

Best Buy, Geek Squad the worst

As if Best Buy with Geek Squad isn’t enough Now this from the overpriced and less knowledgeable than you average neighborhood geek that built his own computer isn’t bad enough, now you have employees stealing identifies from customers. This is a company to avoid at all cost!

Their customer service is one of the worst in the business. It is especially bad since they are as big of a chain as they are. Best Buy lost our business long years ago when they falsely advertised an item, sent us on a wild good chase to get it, that never happened.

Best Buy Corporation is apologizing to the victims of an identity theft ring that appears to have involved a Gwinnett County Best Buy employee and her boyfriend.

Investigators say Adriana Orellana ran applications for iPhone and Verizon service using the names and information from victims her boyfriend had stolen the identities from.

Christopher Verdell is behind bars. Both he and Orellana are charged in three cases where police say they have video showing the couple committing the crimes at the Best Buy store on Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth.

That is the store where Orellana worked in the phone department. Gwinnett County police reports show Best Buy internal security suspects there are as many as 30 additional incidents at the Pleasant Hill store and another store in Atlanta where a relative of Orellana’s works.

“I got a welcome letter from Verizon in the mail,” said alleged victim Sam Rushing.

Rushing told Channel 2 Gwinnett Bureau Chief Tony Thomas that the letter was the first indication he had of any problem. After looking into the issue, he realized someone had ordered two iPhones and service plans from the store.

He called Best Buy and was told the company already had the couple under surveillance and suspected something was going on.

“Apparently they had my social security number, address, and whatever other information they had I don’t know.” Rushing said.

“Pretty risky, pretty bold, and then to do those transactions in the store where she works, pretty bold,” Gwinnett County police Cpl. Jake Smith said.

Investigators said Orellana confessed to her role in the crimes and put all the blame on Verdell. She claimed not to know where he got the stolen information and said he paid her about $300 for her role. Orellana has bonded out of jail. Verdell remains in jail on a $7,800 bond.

In a way, Rushing is just relieved to know he was not the only victim.

“The more there are, the longer they are going away,” he said.

Best Buy Corporate officials sent Thomas an email late Friday which reads:

“We are disappointed by allegations that an employee would engage in criminal fraud. Conspiring to use customer data stolen from a third-party source to activate phones and tablets goes against everything we expect from our employees and everything we stand for as a company. As soon as we detected the fraud, we immediately enlisted the help of police. We apologize to the individuals who were affected and are continuing to work with authorities involved with the case.”

Windows 8 Product Key issue

Windows 8 product key issue that you probably do not know about. Microsoft claims the product key is embedded in the BIOS of the computer but that is not always true.

If you bought a computer with Windows 8 or 8.1 the product key is not located on the outside of the computer. It is ONLY embedded in the system itself. This means if you do not make your recovery disks it can’t be reloaded. The only other way to retrieve your product key is to use Belarc Advisor which is downloadable from http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Customer Service – Is the Customer ALWAYS right?

Customer service is our #1 goal. We strive to make sure our customers are happy. We have even lost money to make sure that our customers are happy. We are here to make the best suggestion to you for your technology needs, not to just put money in our pockets. When a big box location does tries with their customer service they  go into it knowing they aren’t really losing anything. When their markup is 200 – 500% of what they pay them to give the item for them to give it away or mark it down to an absurd low price is not a problem. We aren’t perfect but when there is a problem we treat our customers with respect and expect the same in return.

Although we have a no return policy, we do have a 100% satisfaction guarantee and that’s even better. Why? Because it means our first level is to make sure you get what you expect out of the experience of our service.

We are very aware that small business owners that succeed do so because they strive to provide above average service, be competitive with pricing, etc. We know that the best form of advertising is still word of mouth.

I am not sure why some people think that prices are negotiable or try to not pay their bill. Do you go to Walmart and try to negotiate a price?

Click the Customer Service link below for an article about this.

Looking for IT Support? Customer Service should be the #1 thing you care about

If you are a company looking for IT Support or someone to do a contract work for you, why wouldn’t you ask for current references? This is your business, your life, your livelihood. Hiring someone because “they need the work” or “they are a good person” to work on your computer system is not a very good business decision. Realize also that some IT Support companies target businesses and will overload themselves and will not be able to support you like you need. They will concentrate on the larger customers. We cater to home users, home based businesses and small business and only take on a very few businesses that need constant IT Support. We have partnerships with other quality businesses in the area and can point you to the right fit for your business if we can’t take on your support. Why? because we appreciate our customers, potential customers and value your business needs like it is our own. That’s why you can come see us first and trust us.

Any of you other IT companies out there that are trying to do a good job, this is a fair warning to you. Be careful of the snakes in the grass that talk a good game but don’t know their butt from a hole in the ground about IT. Once those people get their foot in the door or get the ear of a customer you are doomed. There are a lot of us out there doing a great job and even support each other. The people you have to watch for are those that don’t actually have a business and just claim to know something about IT. This is also a fair warning to our valued customers. Good IT people ban together and help each other. Just because you know someone on a social level is not a good reason to just hire them to do a job.

Custom Built Computer

Custom built computer, is it for everyone? Quite a few people that know a little about a computer think they can easily put together their own custom built computer. There is a lot more to it than just throwing together some parts, starting it up and watching it run.

If you buy a custom built computer from someone you better make sure they know what they are doing. What about warranty? Where did they get their software? Where did they get their training? Are they sure they have properly checked the amount of wattage needed for the power supply? What happens when you have a problem with a custom built computer?

All of these questions about a custom built computer are valid and important. AML Computer Services has many years of experience in building and repairing computers. Because of this we know what works but we still tested it before it gets to you.

Custom Built Computer

Custom Built Computer techs

These guys are experts in finding the right parts to fit into your system to make sure it runs as fast as possible and efficient. All of our components have been tested for a long time before we chose what component manufacturer to utilize. Once the computer has been built we then have a 24 hour burn in time utilizing the latest software technology to “stress test” the system. This helps us insure that there are less failures once you made your purchase. However, if there is a failure you can be sure that you are covered under our warranty of at least 1 (one) year. That warranty is done by us so you don’t have to wait weeks to get your computer up and running.

Anytime you buy a computer from a retail chain store you only get the manufacturers warranty unless you purchase some “extra” plan. Even then several places only send your computer off to get it fixed and you might have to wait 2 – 3 weeks or longer. Even those that do repair at their location can take 1 – 2 weeks. Do you really want to wait that long or had you rather know that we can fix it in 24 – 48 hours?

Where do you get a custom built computer you can trust to work?

AML Computer Services of course. Come by and check out our custom built computers. If you have specifics you need, we have got you covered.

Anti-Virus programs… the truth

We did our own testing of Anti-Virus programs. We tested both paid and free. We found negligible differences for the home user. The bottom line was that no anti-virus program blocked everything. This ranking list of “Them” was from Consumer Reports. Theirs is ranked by numbers and we ranked ours by another method as you can see. Please bear in mind our testing was NOT meant for business but only a home user.

We decided to test this because we used to sell anti-virus programs because that part of the industry is not friendly toward the small business. Since the profit margin was minimal to non-existent unless you could sell a large volume we wanted to know was it worth it to even sell it at all. We currently use the anti-virus program AVG FREE and have for 2 years and we surf as much, check email, work on computers with viruses, etc. and guess what? We have been virus free the WHOLE time. That’s right, not ONE virus on our system. Our findings are a little different from “Them” but I don’t have any idea how they tested theirs. In our case, we had computers with viruses on them and had those anti-virus program installed on the computer. Our results are based on what the program found and if it eliminated the virus and/or stopped it completely from getting through the “door”.  Below are our real world results.

Anti-Virus Programs Ranking Test

Windstream Communications is the worst ISP

A lot of you are a slave to Windstream Communications in the Dawson County area. I am truly sorry for you and I. This is the WORST ISP on the planet. They have constant outages and speeds that you would be better off on dial up. Their equipment is garbage. ‪#‎Windstreamsux‬ is an understatement of these people. I have been paying for 6mb of speed and usually get about 1mb. They simply DO NOT CARE! But North Georgia Network runs fiber to businesses so if you are like me and have a business contact them to see what they can do because Windstream can’t and won’t delivery. If you have a choice use ANYONE else.

Windstream Communications claim they are working on the “latency” issues but really they have mishandled their money, customers and they just plain do not care. They continue to push out the date of a “solution”. Someone at Windstream Communications that makes a huge salary needs to get off their butt and actually do some work and make something happen.

As a person in the computer field for 30 years and having worked directly for a telecommunications company that provided internet and phone just like Windstream Communications, I can say they are full of crap. It does not take this long to order and install equipment that will work for the customer. As a small business owner I am losing money because of Windstream Communications. As a business owner or home user if you can use anyone else, do it.

Piss on Windstream Communications they suck

Satisfaction and Price guarantee, you betcha! We have one.

Our price guarantee is simple. It is a price guarantee that we can fix the computer for the price we guarantee or less. This means your expectations meet our results. We don’t charge for a diagnostic fee on anything that only takes us a few moments. We didn’t start this computer repair company to see how much money we could make on people. We started it to help people find a cost effective, honest solution to their repair needs.

When you buy a computer from us if you have a warranty repair issue we make sure we help you interact with the manufacturer at no cost to you. If you buy a factory refurbished computer from us we will warranty it for a year. When you buy a used computer from us we warranty that for 90 days. How our parts replacement works is we will replace any part AT cost and not charge labor during that warranty period.

If we don’t believe we can fix something with your 100% satisfaction, we won’t even try. We do utilize other computer and cell phone related companies in the area to get your item serviced correctly. We know them, we have talked to them and trust them to take care of the customers of this area.

So we don’t just have a price guarantee we have a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee. We don’t try to be the lowest price in town, we strive to be the best in town.

We greatly appreciate the customers of Dawsonville and surrounding areas and are constantly striving to serve them better.

Defrag or not and when

Defrag a hard drive, when is it time? Is it necessary to defrag at all?

The computer hard drive is where all files are stored. When you defrag a hard drive it is literally moving the files around to optimize their accessibility of your programs. Realize that files are actually being moved around. I highly recommend you have a good backup and any important program disks ready in case you need to reinstall anything. Am I trying to scare you? NO. I am trying to make sure you realize that what you are doing can have a volatile effect on files and programs. This is especially true if your hard drive has already shown signs of problems. Those signs can be blue screen, programs not responding, the computer trying to run a check disk on start up, the computer not wanting to start up and instead doing a repair, etc.

When data, such as a file, is stored on a hard drive the operating system attempts to store that file in one section of locations that are connecting without a break. This called contiguous space. When you have a new hard drive, storing data in contiguous spaces is not a problem. As you use the hard drive the files will be deleted from it and small pockets of space will be created on your hard drive. These small pockets of space on your hard drive is called fragmentation.

When a hard drive is fragmented, and the operating system wants to store a file on the hard drive, it attempts to store it in a section of contiguous space that will be large enough to accommodate the file. If the hard drive is heavily fragmented, there is the possibility that there will not be enough contiguous space available to store the file, and therefore the file will be broken up and stored in multiple locations on the hard drive. This causes the file to become fragmented. This is especially bad when installing new software on your computer because the program will now be installed over multiple locations on your hard drive. Now when you run this particular application its performance will be degraded because it has to be loaded from multiple locations on the hard drive.

To solve this problem, software developers developed a type of program called a Disk Defragmenter. A defragmenter is an application that reorganizes the data on your hard drive’s partitions in such a manner that the files are stored in as much contiguous space as possible. The defragmenter will search your hard drive partition and move data from one location to another location, so that the files stored there are one contiguous piece, instead of being spread throughout multiple locations on the hard drive’s partition. This allows the programs and data to run more efficiently and quickly as the operating system does not have to read from multiple locations.

So, now that you understand the mechanics of a fragmented hard drive and what defragmentation does, you can better identify when to run the defragmentation program. I still want to emphasize that you are moving files around on that drive so make sure you have a good backup and any original disks for programs.

All-in-one PC? Good buy or not?

Computer repair on an all-in-one PC, does it cost me more? Are they a good value for the money? What are the brands that are the best?

These questions are what you should be asking when you think about buying one of these. Remember the sales person where you go may want you to buy what pads his/her pocket best or may not even know what they are talking about at all. Just because a store claims their sales people don’t get commissions does not mean they don’t get bonuses on brands sold. No matter what brand you choose or how good it is supposed to be, it’s an all-in-one unit that means everything is integrated and any repair on it will be more expensive or not even possible at all for a reasonable cost. Let me give you an example, your video card on board goes out, there isn’t another slot to add a card so you have to replace the whole motherboard. Now instead of a $79 add-on card you are going to spend $350 on the board alone, not including install. So, once that year warranty runs out you are on your own to figure out what is cost effective.

I have seen several of these, no matter the manufacturer, have multiple issues. Video problems and wireless connectivity issues are the top two but closely followed by motherboard issues, probably because of heat. If you think it’s worth it to spend almost $900 on what you can get for $700 if you get a normal desktop PC with a monitor, then go right ahead but you won’t find me doing that, ever.

If all you want one for is the touch screen, you’ll get tired of that but just in case you think you won’t, there are manufacturers that make touch screen monitors for desktop PC’s. The touch screen monitors cost a little more, not much and are very easy to install. As a plus it also works with any version of Windows.

That being said the all-in-one PC is still somewhat new and has a lot of issues from what I have seen. Who does it right? APPLE, you want an all-in-one computer that works, get an iMac with or without touch screen. At least you won’t have to put up with Windows 8.

Cell phone repair, computer repair – partnerships with local businesses

We partner with some companies but not others, here’s why… AML Computer Services has established itself in the Dawsonville, Ga and surrounding area as the best, most honest, fairest price computer repair and cell phone repair facility around. Now others have decided to get in on a piece of what has been established. Before you make a choice where to have your computer repair or cell phone repair done make sure you evaluate who they are and why they are there. If they have copied our website, copied someone’s business model, copied advertising, etc. maybe there’s a reason. It might not be the best reason. It might be because they have unscrupulous business and personal dealings. Some people can’t simply go out and make a business for themselves they have to steal, lie and cheat.

We don’t charge twice what we get parts for, we don’t scare you into spending what you don’t need to spend, we don’t claim to have technicians that don’t exist or can’t do the job. What you do get is a quality job, someone that is trustworthy and the best price we can give you and still stay in business. That is why the only computer repair and cell phone repair we partner with in the area is Computer Medics of Lanier. So if you are in the Cumming, Dawsonville, Dahlonega, Big Canoe, Jasper, Gainesville, Marble Hill, Blue Ridge, Cleveland and surrounding areas, the two of us are here to help you get the best quality, best cost, best service that is available.

We don’t have to offer 10% off the other guy in town because we are already lower on our pricing than them. We get our parts directly from local OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) suppliers and they carry a warranty. If you are a business needing IT Support why would you pay someone a monthly fee to be “on call”. We don’t charge our customers for phone or remote support and our price is the same whether you bring something to us or we come to you. We also offer free pickup and delivery if that is what you want or need.

Microsoft Certification, necessary?

Computer repair, PC Repair, Laptop Repair or Apple Repair done by someone without the certification? OH MY!! no, not really. What does this certification mean? Not as much as it used to mean that is for sure. Have you ever seen those people that could pass a test but didn’t know how to pour water out of a pitcher, even if the directions were on the bottom? Then there are some people can just pass a test but have no “horse sense”.

If someone claims to be Microsoft Certified you can not confirm it unless the person has their Microsoft ID Card. Then you can look it up through Microsoft. Other than that there is no way to prove they have the certification they claim. Today’s printers and software are quite capable of printing a certificate that looks real.

Does that certification really matter? It means they took the final exam and passed. It doesn’t mean they have any real world experience. What you really want is a technician that has gotten their training through trade schools, jobs they held and real world experience. A certification of any type like that will not keep your warranty from being voided if it is under warranty. An honest technician will tell you that and see if your product is under warranty before doing any work.

Why would you want to know if it is under warranty? With the exception of a cracked LCD screen most other things are covered for FREE by the manufacturer. We are here to help you save money and we will make sure to let you know if it is a warranty situation. We can even help by being the middle man making the call to the manufacturer and arranging shipping back if you want or we can supply you the phone number to call.

Email questions, use web based or a program?

Why use web based email or a program that stores them on your computer? Which one is better? These are questions that I get a lot. There are pros and cons of both.

Web based email can offer you the ability to log in from anywhere and get your email, have it stored on their server and hopefully backed up. However, if you are using a service like Gmail, Hotmail or Ymail (Yahoo) you will not get any support if you have an issue. This includes issues like someone hacking your account, having a virus attached to your email address from their server or lost email. If you ever have a problem with your email where it starts spamming (sending out emails you didn’t write) to people you normally email these companies will not help you. They will claim it is on your computer and your only choice to get rid of this happening is to create a new email address and quit using your current one.

There are web based email companies out there that do give some technical support. Those are normally your ISP (Internet Service Provider) that provide your DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) to your home or business.

There are others out there that are web based that can help you also. If you have a web page that is hosted by true web hosting company these usually come with email addresses and you can get support from them also.

Email programs that download the email onto your computer like Outlook Express, Outlook, Thunderbird and Windows Live Mail do allow you to be the one to backup your own email. However, a lot of backup programs out there do not automatically find your email on your computer. So if you use a backup program make sure it is finding the database file(s) for your email.

Website add-ons, toolbars, be careful

Websites or programs that want you to add on their toolbar are causing your computer to slow down. Even Adobe now wants to add on Mcafee Security Scan and it’s simple, don’t do it. For one thing if you do allow Adobe to add on this Mcafee Security Scan and you already have an anti-virus program it will interfere and cause neither to properly protect you. So watch what you are installing and uncheck toolbars and other add-on things.

I also recommend that you set programs that want to do updates to only download the update and let you install it when you are ready. The reason is that especially Windows updates will reboot your computer on their own. You never know what kind of data loss can occur.

I also want to steer you away from loading any registry fix program like Registry Mechanic or PC Doctor. Unless you are willing to pay them the full price to do the job you are only adding on a program that is aggravating and will slow your computer down dramatically.

Add on screensavers as cool as you think they are too often add on their own toolbars and other things that are basically malware. This is especially true with some seemingly harmless things like Bearshare. Bearshare to me is nothing more than a virus or malware. Bearshare is supposedly a music sharing site. It will cause your internet browser to redirect every time you try to search. It is extremely difficult to get rid of and can even cause you to have to completely reload Windows. There are many others like that too one example is those come in the forms of smiley faces toolbars.

If you use a fileshare program like Limewire or any torrent site where you are downloading and sharing illegal music and programs, you are opening yourself up to a world of problems. These can easily include identity theft and viruses.

Is my computer too old to repair or upgrade?

Computer repair or computer upgrades can be tricky to know when to do them or how much to spend. A very simple rule if it’s 3 years old, it is probably more cost effective to replace it. There are some exceptions to this depending on what you are wanting to do with the computer. Adding memory might be a good option. Updating to a new Windows version, not so much, especially if it’s Windows 8. Replacing the hard drive that has crashed is not cost effective, unless you are willing to replace it with a used hard drive. Reloading the Windows operating system might be a good option, if the drive is in tact, as long as you have the original product key. The biggest problem with reloading Windows it will almost always causes all the add-on software to have to be reloaded. This means you must have the original disks and product keys on all loaded software. Often times the computer owner doesn’t realize this. It is especially true with Microsoft Office (Word/Excel) that they are not part of the Windows operating system.

Reloading the operating system is not an option to get rid of a virus. Any technician that utilizes this method as a primary way to get rid of a virus does not know what they are doing. This operating system reload should only be as a last resort.

If a customer has a computer that is 5 years old and need to spend $200 to fix it I always recommend they consider purchasing a new computer. You might ask about “board level repair”. Yea, we can do that but why? It won’t save you money and if a component on the board went out, there are other reasons. Most manufacturers have proprietary components on the boards and anyone that has real industry knowledge knows this and does not try to fool someone with such deceptive language.

What about cell phone repair? The small circuitry on the board of the cell phone can not be done effectively except in the case of the diode that controls the backlight and even that is tricky. Especially since you have to cut away Considering that we have never in 2 years run across a need or cost effective solution for our customer by doing that diode repair, I doubt we will do it going forward.

Computer Repair, Cell Phone Repair, who are they? Trust them with your data?

Do they have a felony? Maybe the felony is drug addicted related? Are they completely honest about having proper insurance to cover your computer equipment and data? Are they licensed to do business in your county and state? Are they paying taxes? Do they have any references? How quick do you think they could find your financial information and sell it?

Answers like “your insurance is when you pay me for the job I have done and you are satisfied” is not insurance. What happens if you have found data loss or bad work done on your computer after they leave? Do you have any recourse with some answer like that? Can you even find them again?

You don’t think twice about paying a Doctor $250 an hour for your health,  you don’t think twice about paying a lawyer $500 an hour for legal matters. What about the person working on your computer? Your life is on that computer a lot of times. Your private pictures, documents, financial information and more. Do you want someone with a felony working on it? Someone that is avoiding paying taxes? If they are avoiding paying taxes by not having a business license or a sales tax license that is a criminal offense. Do you want to be party to that and possibly have to testify or even be charged with a crime too? I surely wouldn’t trust them with my private life on my computer data.

$100 an hour is a great value to work on a computer. In the Atlanta area it’s often $150 or more. These guys with squads charge that much as a diagnostic fee and that is if you bring it to them. We come to you at no additional charge, we don’t charge for every minute we are on site, we don’t try to run up the bill, we don’t charge a “trip” charge and more.

What we do is the job right, fast, efficient and at the best cost we can give you. Check our references, check our backgrounds and you can always find us right here at AML Computer Servcies 258 Beartooth Parkway Suite 180, Dawsonville, Ga. 30534
